Full Description:
This dynamic program demonstrates an innovative model for assessing ADHD in the schools. In a departure from other approaches, DuPaul and Stoner depict assessment as a collaborative, problem-solving process that is inextricably linked to the planning of individualized interventions. Conducted on an ongoing basis, this process enables decisions to be reevaluated and interventions modified as the need arises. The video presents the case of Todd, an elementary school student with undiagnosed ADHD, whose teacher brings his disruptive behavior to the attention of the school psychologist and other members of the school's assessment team. Feeaturing helpful graphics that reinforce the points discussed, the program is structured around the goal of comprehensively evaluating Todd's behavioral functioning at school and at home. A range of crucial assessment techniques are considered, including parent interviews, behavior and academic performance rating scales, and direct observation. Further illumination is provided in an interview segment with world-renowned ADHD expert Russell A. Barkley.
The Manual
A practical reference and hands-on tool, the accompanying manual contains additional details and background information on the assessment procedures and methods presented in the video, as well as helpful case examples. Discussion questions are featured throughout, and the manual concludes by listing related references and resources.
"Presenting a comprehensive system for ADHD assessment and intervention, these videotapes incorporate the latest thinking on the nature of attention disorders. DuPaul and Stoner's approach is laudable for several reasons. It is multimodal, incorporating standardized measures as well as interview and observation data. The videos show a multidisciplinary team whose work is both realistic and professional, with all members contributing to both the assessment and intervention phases of the process. The emphasis on daily classroom performance, both academic and behavioral, is well-placed. The intervention tape is full of practical suggestions for classroom management, with a nice distinction between reactive and proactive strategies, as well as interventions that can be individually tailored or implemented classwide. These tapes depict real people grappling with the kinds of problems that I encounter in my practice on a daily basis." -Peg Dawson, EdD, Center for Learning and Attention Disorders, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
"DuPaul and Stoner have provided state-of-the-art, step-by-step training programs for conducting assessments and designing effective interventions for children with ADHD. The information in these videos and manuals is simple, straightforward, and useful, both for schools and university teacher preparation programs. This is research-to-practice at its best." -Robert Reid, PhD, Department of Special Education, University of Nebraska, Lincoln
